Pigs at Work – The Ulitmate Tilling Machine

Andrew and Chris were presented with a quandary after they had harvested all the veggies and wanted to turn the soil. How could they till and naturally fertilize the field without using a lot (or any!) fossil fuel?

Enter the pigs!! Below is a pictorial of what the pigs can accomplish in just 11 days…

The pigs are let in and go immediately to the low-hanging ‘fruit’.

Then they have to dig deeper to get at the roots just below the surface. Did I mention they do all their digging with their noses?

Now the serious tilling begins. Roots, grubs and anything else under the soil is fair game for this crew.

The crew is still always looking for some scraps from the kitchen. They love carrot shavings, any breads and pizza.

A job well done. Now the chickens will pass through with their high-test nitrogen droppings, add a little rain and…VOILA! Soil conditioned to go the distance.
